It’s Black History Month and I so appreciate the month set aside to lift up the history of Black people in this country. Yes, we need to study and acknowledge our history all year long AND the attention a month like this one gives us is worthwhile. All kinds of people, colleges and corporations are sharing Black History on every platform you can imagine. I’ve learned about history-makers all around me and some who came way before me.
Speaking of “way before me”, I have been meditating deeply on the years and years of the American experience for people of African descent. I see so vividly, even viscerally that the thought of doing nothing could have gotten you killed!!!!
And here we are. In a world encouraging us to chill, rest, practice self-care, join the Nap Ministry, do absolutely nothing. And yet the voices still haunt me. “You so lazy! Good-for-nothin! Unproductive. Sleeping til noon makes you a bum! Wasting time. You have no hustle! Get your grind on! Chop wood, carry water. I know your parents taught you better than that. ”
Yeah, those voices. I’m telling those voices where they can go and that’s far far away from my consciousness. Join me. Use whatever words work for you. Because those voices need to go on and get out of here. I am so clear that our liberation includes feeling so so good about doing absolutely nothing on a regular basis. Your contributions on the other side of resting will be that much more impactful & rewarding. #restisrevolutionary#blackhistorymonth#folamionthefuture#listening4justice
